What's the Key to Unlock the Lockout?

As you all have probably seen in the news lately, the NBA is in bad shape right now. There is a lockout and the players are fighting for more money, while the owners are denying them the money. This has forced some players to go overseas and play for teams in Europe and Asia. The players want more than 50 percent of basketball related income, but the owners are unwilling to give them over 50 percent because that would put the players in a higher position of power than the owners. Most recently, the owners offered the players an ultimatum and if they did not take it, they would not get more than 47 percent anytime in the future. The led to the players voluntarily dissolving their union and now they are filing an antitrust lawsuit against the NBA. Things are going downhill fast and if a solution is not found, the entire NBA season could be in jeopardy, leaving fans with only college basketball to fill the void.

So what do you guys think? Do the players have the right to more money? Or are the owners right in denying them the money? Who is being more stubborn? After all, without the players, there is no NBA. Also, are there any easier solutions that you see on this matter?

  1. Here again is another problem with the main cause being money. I agree with the owners on this one. I think the players do not need more money. They easily receive enough to comfortably support themselves. Many NBA teams do no even make much profit so there is really no reason for the players to be asking for more money. I hope this situation is worked out before an entire season is missed out on. The players would really be losing money then.

  2. I agree with the owners on this issue. The players really don't deserve to get that much money because it's unnecessary for them to be paid much more than they already are! I think that the players are being extreme selfish with this whole money problem because, like Laura said, they will be losing more money than ever by not playing in this years NBA season. It's pathetic that people have to argue so much about money. Hopefully they resolve the problem so that the season actually takes place.

  3. I think it is extremely sad to see billionaires fight with millionaires over money. An entire industry had to collapse because of how stubborn both sides have been. The players union is about to be decertified in order for each player to have a lawsuit against the owners. I miss basketball more than I miss any other sport as it is my favorite to watch. It is going to be an extremely long winter not being able to watch the Cleveland Cavaliers.

  4. I think this is ridiculous. The players may say that there is no NBA without them, but the truth is there is no NBA without the fans. As of now, they have missed an incredible amount of the season, which ultimately hurts the fans who just want to watch basketball! Most players are already making millions of dollars and I personally don't think they deserve any more. After all, they are only playing a game. However, the owners are operating a business at an incredible risk. They take the risk upon themselves and deserve to be rewarded. Its selfish that the players want to receive more than 50% of the money.

  5. As a fan, the players are always right. They make the game; without them, there is no revenue. In addition, the owners are all businessmen with other sources of income-it's not like they'll starve. I think that the players are definitely being more stubborn, but that's the only way they're going to get what they want. Do they deserve more money? No, but that doesn't matter now. All that matters is that if the players don't get what they want, there is no basketball. It isn't a question of deserve or not, right or wrong. It is what it is, and people are just going to have to deal with it or see the NBA season die. Really, the commissioner is also at fault.

All commissioners of all sports are incompetent. Every commissioner I've seen has done something stupid that has had a seriously negative consequence on their respective sport. By cancelling more and more of the season, this commissioner is providing a perfect example.

I think the easiest solution to the problem would be to give the players 51% and just start playing again. Stop dithering about a few percentage points and just play basketball.

  6. In fact I don't know much about NBA, but a lot of my friends are NBA fans, so I still heard many news, like there is a news that Kobe may join a Chinese basketball team. I think it's a little weird that these player go away just because thay want more money, and they already have a lot of money, and I don't think 50% of basketball relate income will affect their life a lot. Their behavior is also not responsible for the audience and their fans.
